Do i-Kfz yourself or hire a vehicle registration service?

You can register your vehicle entirely online today through Germany's official i-Kfz portal – or hire a registration service that handles the authority visit for you by power of attorney. Both routes are valid. i-Kfz is cheaper on the fees, but it depends on technology and the right vehicle documents, and in practice it often fails at exactly those points. This guide compares both options honestly – no sugar-coating – and gives you a clear decision aid for which path fits your situation.

In short

i-Kfz is Germany's official online registration and, with low authority fees, the cheapest route – but only if you have a German ID card with an activated eID, the AusweisApp and a vehicle with exposed security codes. If any of these is missing, i-Kfz fails. A registration service covers every case by power of attorney for a service fee.

What exactly is i-Kfz?

i-Kfz (internet-based vehicle registration) is the official online procedure of Germany's registration authorities. Since expansion stage 4 in September 2023, you can handle new registration, transfer of ownership, change of keeper, re-registration and deregistration fully online – with no appointment and no trip to the registration office. You identify yourself digitally, enter the vehicle and insurance data, and after approval receive a registration that is immediately valid on a provisional basis; the registration certificate, stickers and papers arrive by post. Convenient in theory – but it hinges on several prerequisites.

The requirements for i-Kfz

For i-Kfz to work you need: a German ID card (issued from 2010) with an activated online function (eID) and its six-digit PIN – or, alternatively, an electronic residence permit (eAT); the AusweisApp on an NFC-capable smartphone, or a USB card reader on a PC; an eVB confirmation number from your insurer; a bank account for the fees via SEPA; and the exposed security codes. These concealed codes are printed on registration certificate Part I and Part II and on the plate stickers, and must be scratched free and entered during the process.

When i-Kfz fails in practice

The most common stumbling block is the eID: many ID cards never had the online function activated, or the PIN is lost – and a new PIN letter can take weeks. On top of that: no NFC smartphone and no AusweisApp; a foreign ID without a notified eID (many national ID cards and passports simply don't work); older vehicles whose papers and plates were issued before around 2015 and therefore carry no concealed security codes – an online transfer is then impossible; a lost registration certificate Part II or damaged stickers. In all these cases i-Kfz breaks down.

Cost comparison

On the fees alone, i-Kfz is honestly cheaper: the official online charges are lower (roughly around €13 for a registration, a few euros for a deregistration), plus the physical plates (about €20–35 at a plate maker) and, one-off, possibly a card reader or eID activation. With a registration service you also pay a service fee: registration from €79.90, change of keeper from €66.90, deregistration €22. Official fees, plates and shipping are itemised separately. In return, all the technology and eID effort disappears, and every case is doable.

Time and effort comparison

If everything is perfectly prepared, i-Kfz takes 20–30 minutes. Realistically it often turns into hours or days: requesting and waiting for a PIN letter, setting up the AusweisApp, scratching the codes free, troubleshooting errors when the card is read. With a registration service you upload photos of your documents in about ten minutes and sign the power of attorney online. We handle the entire authority visit with our certified access; the plates come to your home by post, anywhere in Germany.

Which route fits whom – the decision aid

i-Kfz suits you if you hold a German ID with an active eID and PIN, own an NFC smartphone, are registering a newer vehicle with complete security codes, and have the time and a little appetite for the technology. A registration service is the right choice if you have no activated eID or PIN, identify with a foreign ID, are registering an older vehicle without security codes, have no time or patience for the tech, are in a hurry, or register regularly as a dealer or company. In short: i-Kfz for the well-equipped standard case, a registration service for everything else.

Conclusion

i-Kfz is a good, low-cost route – but only when every requirement is met. In practice the do-it-yourself attempt often fails at a missing eID, older vehicles without security codes, or foreign ID cards. That is exactly the gap a registration service fills: by power of attorney we cover every case, nationwide, without you having to deal with technology or the authority. You pay a transparent service fee – and save time, nerves and the detour through failed online attempts.
