Deregister and reserve the plate at the same time
If you deregister your car and want to use the plate again later, both can be done in one go: in the online deregistration via Zulassungsautomat you simply tick the reservation of your current plate. The authority then holds the plate for you; for how long is set by the vehicle registration regulation. The details and the period are in the deregistration guide.
Frequently asked questions
Are the plates valid everywhere?
Yes. We emboss to DIN 74069; the plates are accepted throughout Germany.
What does shipping cost?
Nothing. Shipping is included, for one plate just as for three.
Why would I need three plates?
Two for the vehicle and a third one for a bike rack, for example, or as a spare.
How does the reservation work?
We reserve your chosen plate at your registration office and send you the reservation number. The office fee for the reservation is passed on unchanged; it is credited against the fee when the vehicle is registered.
Is a reservation enough to register the car?
The reservation secures the number for you. The registration itself is a separate procedure, you can order that from us online as well.
How is a German number plate structured?
From the distinguishing sign of the registration authority, one or two letters and one to four digits, within the permitted plate length. You can freely choose the letters and numbers after the distinguishing sign, as long as the combination is still available.
Which letter combinations are not allowed?
For historical reasons the combinations HJ, KZ, SS, SA and NS are forbidden, as are comparable ones. The combination also has to be free at the time of the reservation or the allocation.
Which standard do the plates meet?
All our plates are embossed to DIN 74069 and come in the standard size of 520 × 110 mm. They therefore meet the same standard German registration offices require.
What does a plate have to fulfil to be accepted at registration?
A number plate is more than a piece of metal: it has to be embossed to DIN 74069, carry the right distinguishing sign and keep the standard format in order to be accepted at registration.
Is the price of the plates an official fee?
No. Making the plates is not an official fee but a market price; the official fee schedule explicitly lists no official prices for number plates. Our price is the price for manufacturing the plates and is completely separate from official fees.
How do I get my embossed plates?
We emboss your plates to DIN 74069 and send them to you by post once your order is complete.
What is a short-term plate (Kurzzeitkennzeichen)?
A short-term plate allows journeys for a test drive, a transfer or the roadworthiness test, valid for a maximum of five days.
What do I need a short-term plate for?
For test drives, transferring a vehicle you bought to another city, or driving to the roadworthiness test (TÜV). It is valid for a maximum of five days from allocation.
Which documents do I need for a short-term plate?
An identity card or passport, a special eVB number for short-term plates and, depending on the case, the vehicle papers plus valid proof of the roadworthiness test (TÜV).
Does the vehicle need a valid roadworthiness test for a short-term plate?
For journeys on public roads a valid roadworthiness test is normally required. Special rules apply to the journey to the test itself. Without a valid test, only trips to the garage or to the test are allowed.
What does a short-term plate cost at the authority?
An official fee of around 13 €, plates of roughly 25 to 40 €, plus an eVB specifically for short-term plates, usually 50 to 80 € in total.
Plate lost or stolen, what should I do?
Go step by step: in case of theft, notify the police first (emergency number 110 or the nearest police station). Then obtain a replacement plate and update your registration at the responsible registration office.
My plate was stolen, do I have to go to the police?
In case of theft: yes. The report protects you from liability if someone misuses your plate for a traffic offence or a crime. You file the report yourself with the police; we do not draft reports and do not give legal advice.
A plate fell off or is damaged: do I need a police report?
With a simple loss and no suspicion of theft, a police report is not strictly necessary. You need a replacement plate and, where applicable, a new embossing or an entry at the registration office.
Which documents do I need for a replacement plate?
As a rule an identity card or passport, the registration certificate part I where available, in case of theft a copy of the police confirmation of the report, and the vehicle data or the previous plate. Exactly which documents are required in an individual case depends on the procedure; the registration office gives binding information on this.
Is there an official fee for a lost plate?
The fee schedule contains no separate official item called „fee for a lost plate“. Instead the costs follow the actual procedure, for example a new registration or a re-registration.
