What you need and where to find the codes
Everything is on your vehicle documents. With the documents at hand you are done in a few minutes. If you are not near the vehicle right now, skip the codes in the order and send them later.
Important: only uncover the codes when you actually order the deregistration. An uncovered code makes the document or the seal invalid.
- 1. Registration certificate part I ( Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I ): carefully scratch off the covered field; the security code is underneath.
- 2. Front number plate: scratch off the official seal with the coat of arms; the first seal code is underneath.
- 3. Rear number plate: scratch off the official seal the same way; the second seal code is underneath.
This applies to a vehicle with two number plates. If the vehicle has only one plate, choose the matching option in the order: then only one seal code is needed.

What do I need?
The number plate and the security codes from the registration certificate and from the seals on both number plates. This applies to a vehicle with two plates; if the vehicle has only one, choose the matching option in the order and one code is enough. It is quickest with the documents at hand. If you are not near the vehicle, skip the codes and send them later.
I lost my registration certificate: can I still deregister?
Not online: the security code is on the registration certificate (part I); without the document no office accepts an online application. In that case you have to go to the registration office. If only the vehicle title ( Fahrzeugbrief ) is missing, we file the deregistration.
I sold my car: do I have to deregister it?
Not necessarily: instead you can report the change of owner to the registration office without delay ( § 15 Absatz 5 FZV ). Deregistering before handing over the car is safer, because tax and insurance obligations end immediately.
Do I have to go anywhere or book an appointment?

Do I need the Online-Ausweis or the AusweisApp?
No, not for deregistration. The vehicle registration ordinance requires no identification for deregistration if the security codes of both seals and of the registration certificate part I are provided ( § 24 Absatz 4 FZV ). It is different for registration and change of owner: there identification is mandatory ( § 20 FZV ).
