When is a re-registration necessary?
Re-registration is the change of a vehicle's registration data: it becomes necessary when the keeper changes or when the current keeper moves to another registration district. The authority re-registers the vehicle and issues a new registration certificate. When you buy a used car, the vehicle must be registered to the new keeper. Today this can be done completely online.
Do I have to re-register my car after moving?
Yes, the address in the vehicle documents must be updated; the registration office of your new place of residence is responsible. You may keep your number plate anywhere in Germany. With us, a move to another registration district keeping your plate costs €79.99 including all fees.
Which documents do I need for a change of owner?
Registration certificate Part I and II with the security codes, the new keeper's ID card and an eVB number. The code on Part II authorises the online re-registration.

What is an eVB number?
The eVB number is the electronic proof of insurance: seven letters and digits with which your insurer confirms to the registration office that the vehicle is insured. Without an eVB there is no registration and no re-registration; only deregistration works without it.
Where do I get an eVB number?
You get the eVB number directly from your insurer: online, by phone or in the app, usually within minutes and free of charge. It is usually valid for several months and is tied to you, not to a particular number plate.
When should I uncover the security codes?
Only uncover the security codes once your order is under way. A sticker, once uncovered, is no longer valid.
